My bets that something or someone still fucks this up before October.

I have 0 dollars says it never happens.

I hope we use the tax money for something cool like universal dental care or a wall to keep Americans out.

There's next to no tax revenue that will be collected. Estimates are not optimistic.

It's probably not as much as weed proponents said it would be, especially considering that stoners like you or Basin aren't going to buy government weed when you can just grow your own, but it's certainly not nothing.

Quote:
Damas says the "most independent" report on the marijuana market has come from the Parliamentary Budget Officer. That report, issued last November, estimates annual national demand for recreational pot at 650 to 690 tons, for a total retail market of $5.5 to $5.8 billion.

Source

How much revenue that's going to translate into is debatable, but it's certainly not going to be zero. This hasn't been done on such a large scale in North America before and so everyone's just guessing at this point.

I have it on good authority that Trudeau pushed for this policy after reading the "pressing matters" and "the besf story" threads on this very forum.

I don't think revenue for weed is... going to be directly benifitial. Unless hemp can be legally exported to other countries in a relevant way I see little in terms of improving on taxation. Taxation is essentially consumed regardless. People who go from spending money on smokes or liquor to weed will have little significant impact. The decline of other products being sold will just be offset by weed when all things normalize.

You have a good point about substituting one tax for another.

Maybe you won’t be looking over your shoulder next time you want to participate in ‘recreational activities’, but that’s really it. Maybe that’s a big thing. I don’t know.

I like Tequila now. That’s a new thing. Got a bottle to celebrate summer. It’s now empty and I need to compensate.

If that’s legal in public parks, a fellow ought to be able to consume liquor in public too.

Fairs fair!

Yeah but when was the last time someone had their head smashed in with a bottle of hemp. Alcohol correlates with violence in a way that hemp will likely never. I don't think driving will be significantly impacted. However my sentiment is the people who think this is going to be great for industry don't realize the weed they are buying out of shops is going to be above market value simply for the fact that there are going to be an insane amount of regulations, business licenses, employees etc vs the old way.

It makes sense. No need to spend so much money jailing people over something innocent. About fucking time.

I'd much prefer having legal weed as a substitute for alcohol. I love IPAs and all that flavor, but my big problem is I often love it too much. If I find a good thing, then more is always better, right?. THC would be a healthier way to unwind.

I've only taken one drag off a joint when I was much younger. And then another time I ate a complete muffin edible from a seasoned professional and just about went out of my god damned mind. Thought I was going to end up in the hospital and jail and dead all at the same time. Even wrote a note to leave on my desk for the family to find later. Then two hours later it got better. A big part of the problem there was my paranoia about being in trouble and also about ingesting things that are unregulated. Neither experience was great, but I'd be willing to give it a 3rd try.
